Just about every bridge player over forty has read Victor Mollo’s Bridge in the Menagerie, a book that is on any list of the all-time top ten on the game. Towards the end of his life, Mollo continued to write stories about the same well-loved characters (the Hideous Hog, the Rueful Rabbit, Oscar the Owl, and the rest), but they appeared in various magazines around the world, and if you weren’t a subscriber, you didn’t get to read them.
This is the second MPP collection of these lost Menagerie gems, collected for the first time in book form (following The Hog Takes to Precision in 2011). Victor Mollo is everyone’s favorite bridge humorist, and a genuinely new book from him will be greeted as something to be treasured.
Illustrations by bridge cartoonist Bill Buttle add to the fun.
These stories remain timeless: the bridge deals are interesting, Mollo’s writing is crisp, and the humour is still funny. Bridge players the world over owe a debt to Mark Horton and Ron Tacchi for locating these stories from the many magazines where they were first published. — Australian Bridge 03/25/2014
Humor and tricky bridge hands in a rubber bridge setting make for almost everyone’s favorite bridge read. — Kitty Cooper, ACBL District 17 newsletter 11/26/2013
Recommended as a gift for your favorite bridge player. — Phillip Alder, New York Times, November 2013 11/26/2013
Luckily there is material for 2 more books, one to be published next year and on in 2015. — Jon Sveindal, Norway 09/06/2013
I have read all or almost all of Mollo’s published Menagerie stories, and those in this collection are as good as or better than the others; there is nary a dud among them.
The curiosity level never slackens, nor does the Hog’s contrarian bridge wit and wry sarcasm. And there is further good news: The publisher plans to issue two additional Mollo collections with more unpublished stories. The Hideous Hog, like Elvis, is still alive. — Bruce Altshuler, The Bridge World 08/27/2013
If you haven’t met these characters yet, you owe it to yourself to join their world. You’ll enjoy the experience. — The Bellville Intelligencer 07/18/2013
The late Victor Mollo (London, UK) is one of the best-loved authors ever to write about bridge. He penned many excellent how-to books on the game (including Card Play Technique, with Nico Gardner) but it is as a humorist, and the author of Bridge in the Menagerie and its sequels, that he is best remembered.
Bill Buttle (Arnprior, Ontario, Canada) is a former dentist who took up drawing cartoons post-retirement. His 'Two's a Crowd' and 'Double Bill' features have been syndicated in newspapers across Canada. Bill's bridge humor is familiar to North Americans since it appears regularly in the ACBL's monthly Bridge Bulletin (circulation approx. 200,000).
